The Dimitriadis family home in Skopelos was right on the seafront (paralia) and in the 50′s and 60′s when Alexandra Dimitriadis used to play outside with her twin brother Apostolos, there were only a very few shops and cafes in the whole area. Now it is a lively and active place full of shops, cafes and restaurants, Alexandra has converted their magnificent home into a Pension or small hotel that she has named Sotos after her father.
The building is a stone built, Venetian influenced, town house of architectural merit and has been converted with respect to its history and origins. Alexandra has managed to retain the simple style of the home but at the same time modernised enough to meet current standards. She is keen that prospective guests realise that Sotos is not a modern luxury hotel but is a simple but comfotable pension which retains the feeling of the traditional lifestyles of the island. Each room does have its own bathroom and air conditioning though so it’s not without it’s 21st century comforts!
The great glory of Sotos is its central courtyard which has remained unchanged for hundreds of years and the Pelion flag floors combine with the stone walls to provide a beautiful frame for the fruit trees and plants that bring life and colour to this haven. Alex has also had traditional shaped tables made by local craftsman Spiros Ramidanis and their octagonal shape, contrasting with curved legs and pained deep blue, makes them great examples of local skills, traditions and art.
There is also a roof terrace which guests use to overlook the paralia but the view out to sea is somewhat restricted by the plane tree which does however provide shade in the morning for guests to have breakfast, which they can make in the communal kitchen.
