Skopelos Animals

If you wander along the paralia in Skopelos Town and look into the water you always see some fishes bobbing around, ranging in size from teeny tiddlers to quite substantial beasts. Junior especially likes looking for them and wants to catch one and keep it in a bowl so she can watch it. I’ve told her the cats may appreciate that but I’m not sure the fish would.

You can see some of the tiny fishes at the bottom with their larger counterparts above them.
There are also a lot of swallows flying around having built their clay nests everywhere and hatched their young. We’ve been watching one particular nest and have seen the fledglings peering at the world wondering when they can get out and have a go flying around!

Of course it’s not just the birds that have been giving birth unfortunately. There are also a lot of kittens and pregnant cats around adding to the ever expanding numbers of street cats. There is a lovely tabby cat with her three kittens at Englezos. She’s a very protective mother having chased Bonnie (our dog) off when she got to close to a kitten and also having seen several cats off who were strolling on the other side of the road. Here’s a pic of one of them.

Absolutely beautiful I’m sure you’ll agree.
Sean took 3 of Bonnie’s puppies to the mainland this morning. They are going to live on the Pelion in the grounds of a hotel belonging to one of Sean’s friends. I know it’s not ideal, I’d much rather they be living in someone’s house as their companion but that was impossible for us to achieve. They will however be much safer on the mainland away from the poisoners on this island who think nothing of killing ‘inconvenient’ animals. Sean and I both know that if one of our dogs or cats were to fall victim to the poisoners then I would pack up and leave this place and head to the mainland instead.
