Mothers Day x 2
After celebrating Mothers Day a few months’ ago, in accordance with the english date, I got to celebrate it again on Sunday as it seems the Greeks follow the American timing for the occasion (not that junior bothered last year). However, this time, she made me a card at school and a cut out a heart shape to place a poem inside especially for Mother’s – aww sweet! So, it was already turning out better than the last one when she got into a mood in the morning and Sean ended up taking her out so I could have some peace and quiet!
After breakfast, we sat outside to have a drink and watch the scenery when I noticed something jumping in and out of the water. On closer inspection, it turned out to be 3 dolphins playing happily in the sunshine. What a great way to start the day. I’ve never seen dolphins in the wild before and they don’t normally come in to this area around town but since the sewage treatment works has been updated the water has become cleaner – hence the dolphins. We didn’t have our good camera at home so this is all I managed to get

but if you look closely you can make out one of the dolphins just on the surface. Apparently it’s good luck to see a dolphin early in the season, so fingers crossed for the premium bonds!
After watching the dolphins until they disappeared, we walked into town for a drink at En Plo. Now, whenever I go here, if I’m by myself, I have to take a magazine to read because the moment we sit down, junior is off inside to talk to everyone and only comes back for quick sips of her strawberry juice. She pays so much attention to what is going on there that they’ve offered her a job next year as they’re sure she’ll be able to make all the drinks – she is such a notice box or unfailingly nosey depending on your point of view. Fortunately I had Sean with me so I didn’t look like a total ‘billy no mates’. After drinks we moved next door to Nostos for lunch where junior did something she’s never done before – she finished her food before Sean. No-one finishes before Sean, he eats like the food doesn’t touch the sides. Give junior spaghetti and pesto however and she becomes a food monster. She didn’t utter a single word until she’d finished and then only to say “I finished before daddy”. Sean and I both had large salads – in fact I had the same salad I had at about this time last year and which is detailed on the vegan side of the blog for last May! Hence no picture as it looked just the same.
After lunch we moved on for coffee (this is how all Sundays should be
) and sat under cover but outside on comfy purple sofas whilst junior disappeared inside to have the television channel changed to cartoons. After our leisurely drink we headed off home and marvelled at the fact that we’d only spent €25. Not that Skopelos is cheap, I don’t think anywhere in Greece is particularly cheap nowadays, but if you frequent places and they know you’re local then you can expect to pay a little less. Not that this applies in the shops of course, come summer, cometh the price rises in the food shops. Sean will be doing our food shopping in Volos, as with it not being a holiday destination, the prices aren’t affected by seasonal changes.
Another change in time for the holiday season is the addition of this at the port

which appears to be, although it isn’t working yet, a room booking system for those who arrive on Skopelos without having arranged anywhere to stay. This appears on the face of it to be a pretty good idea but I suppose it just depends on how long it takes for it to get up and running.
It’s my birthday tomorrow and I’m in quite a reflective mood (this always happens when I get a year older!) but I think I’ll reflect a bit longer before posting anything else.
