Happy Easter

Well, I finally planted the vegetable patch but whether anything grows remains to be seen. I’ve been reliably informed by a vast amount of people that you can just drop seeds into the soil here and they’ll grow without any problem. Mmmm, not convinced myself. I only have to look at a plant and it starts to wilt so I’m not holding out high hopes of the patch providing us with all our vegetable needs though hopefully junior’s patch of basil will work for her otherwise she’ll be mortified. She has such utter faith in me and my abilities that I’d to hate her to realise I have feet of clay!
Easter has commenced with a vengeance, bringing both good weather and ferry loads of people to the island. It seemed to go from a few people one day, to a paralia full the next, with all the restaurants, bars and shops opening to try and get some of the Easter holiday business. Some businesses will close after Easter for a couple of weeks until the tourist season starts at the beginning of May but hopefully the good weather will stay without any break.
Yesterday we went on a walk around town to visit the churches which had been decorated for Easter. The main reason for us doing this was junior. Junior cannot resist a church, especially the churches over here which seem to sparkle with gold and light to a 5 year old. Every time we pass by a church and she sees it all lit up inside, I have to forcibly restrain her from going in and fingering the ‘bling’. So yesterday was her idea of heaven especially when she found out she could light candles as well. Sean and I left her to it as she certainly seemed to enjoy it whether we were there or not. The pictures were taken on Sean’s i-phone which doesn’t have flash so they’re not the best quality but you get the idea.

After the walk we went for a drink and then on for a meal at Englezos. Whilst in Englezos we heard the beating of drums which we knew signalled the candlelight march to the churches in town, unfortunately what we didn’t realise as we headed down the paralia in our car was that they were all walking our way! Some quick reversing from Sean and then a short wait in the car and enough of them passed so that we could venture back down again to try and get home. We dispersed a few stragglers in the road but luckily there was another car behind us so we didn’t feel too bad.
One thing that really grates whenever there is a celebration here, is the so called fireworks. They’re not fireworks as we know them but rather sound like a car backfiring (loudly) and they scare the life out of the cats, dogs and junior. They just annoy the hell out of me. So hoping to escape them today we went for a drive out to Kalogeros and a walk in the countryside where the silence was deafening – bliss. No firecrackers, just the odd bleat of sheep and singing of the birds. Here is the one and only picture of me that will see the light of day on this blog and that’s because it’s from a distance and from behind!

Hopefully the weather will be fine again tomorrow and we can head out for our Easter picnic – after gorging on chocolate eggs for breakfast of course!
