Time for the beach
The sun was shining, the sky was blue so we did the natural thing and headed for the beach so that junior could build sandcastles. We went to her favourite beach, Limnonari, because it has sand (essential in the construction of castles), it’s sheltered, and it always has a cat or two around. We hadn’t been to the beach since New Year’s Day which is quite shocking really considering how much we like to throw pebbles. Last year we seemed to get to the beach a couple of times a week but I suppose now with work commitments it just isn’t possible all the time. When we moved here I changed the details on my Friends Reunited profile to say that we’d moved to a small island for some laid back living. Well that hasn’t materialised has it? Sean seems to work harder than he did in England, usually with computers to fix or people to visit over the weekend as well which is something I would never allow back in blighty. I suppose it’s difficult to say no to work when you’re trying to establish yourself and perhaps in a few years time we’ll be able to be a bit more picky!
Anyway, back to Limnonari and some pictures
As you can see the obligatory cat was there, but also a very strange guard dog – they breed big Rottweilers here!
So the missing post from last week mainly concerned the recuperation of junior from a rather nasty cold and the first signs of spring on Skopelos, not only in the form of emerging flowers but also the emergence of cafe and taverna owners who have started to get their premises ready in time for the start of the season.
Here are the pictures from last weeks post taken from a vantage point above town
In the run up to Easter at school, junior and classmates made a Kyra Sarakosti or Lady Lent which is a paper doll with seven legs. Each week a leg is removed and, more importantly to junior, whoever removes the leg gets the sweet attached to it! She tells me that last week she got the sweet which I think was due to the fact that she stretched the highest to reach it! You keep junior away from a sweet at your own peril!
Before Easter, on the 25th March, is Independence Day when the Greeks celebrate their independence from Turkey and junior is busy practising her songs and poems although not in front of me of course. If I stand outside the door so she can’t see me I can hear her singing away beautifully but the moment she clocks eyes on me it all goes quiet. She says she’s really looking forward to it though because if there is one thing junior is, it’s a born performer.
The puppies are all still with us in spite of spreading the word far and wide. Skopelos is just not home to many people who want the responsibility of caring for an animal, not just a dog, but any animal. It seems therefore that Sean will have to try and home them on the mainland. He’s off to check out the dog shelter in Volos next week where they will have a better chance of being housed. It’s not ideal and it’s not really what I want but puppies grow and we just don’t have the room for 9 dogs nor the time to give them the attention they need. If we’d moved here to retire and didn’t need to work then I’d have the time to devote to them but the work is backing up and I need to focus on that. Unfortunately the laid back living will have to wait!
