The not at all magical mystery tour

Sean and I both have a failing. It’s the same failing. We both like to take detours off main routes. On the plus sides this means that we’ve always got to know the places where we’ve lived really, really well. However on the minus side it means we can end up, as we did yesterday, travelling along a track which wasn’t really designed for vehicles, any vehicles, and definitely not a BMW estate with dodgy gears! To give you an idea of the terrain, here’s a picture of one of the better parts of the road

where we stopped to admire the view, have a breath of fresh air, and contemplate turning around because we seemed to be on the road to absolutely nowhere. We had a little walk and found that the road (I use that term in the loosest possible sense!) actually forked further on and one path went up and one down(ish). We intrepidly carried on and actually drove over this next section, pictured below, rocks and all.

We did eventually get on to tarmac thankfully and vowed never to take that “road” again.
As you can see from the pictures, the terrain looks extremely dry which is probably being rectified as I type as it has been pouring down with rain since the early hours of the morning. Not just rain but thunder and lightning louder than I’ve ever heard before. Apparently it should stop by late afternoon although I have to say I really don’t mind the rain and the land could certainly do with it. We’ve also heard this morning, although it hasn’t been confirmed as yet, that there has been a fire over in Elios due to the lightning. Apparently they’ve not had as much rain over that side as there is over Skopelos Town.

Doing roads like that two up on a tourist bike can be a bit hairy as well. Glad to hear about the rain – goodness knows the island needs it. Less good news about the fire, I hope it wasn’t too bad.

    Hi,

we did the same as you did but took the track up to the lighthouse at the far end of the island. Scary yes! but it was worth it, not a soul in site, took a few hours to get there and back. Sitting in a taverna on the harbour front thinking of where we had been was wonderful.

    Cheers
