Fire on the island

Yesterday we heard the sirens of the fire trucks and smelt the unmistakeable odour of burning trees. Found out today that a wildfire had started around the area of Agnondas which had been helped by the strong winds yesterday. It all appears to be under control now although the smoke and smouldering can still be seen as shown in the pictures below.

Hi, my wife and I bought house on Skopelos 3 years ago and we are waiting for retirement to arrive so that we can move there permanently. A work colleague told me she had seen on the news about a fire on Skopelos – I dismissed it as her imagination but have just googled “fire on Skopelos” and it came up with your blog. I’ll look over the rest of your blog later and, if you don’t mind I will link to it from mine – my blog has little or nothing to do with Skopelos because we don’t live there full time but I will come back on a regular basis to see what is happening with you.
I’m glad the fire only seems to be (relatively) small, it may seem a large area, but a fire could absolutely devastate our island. Let us hope we don’t move into a summer of fires like happened over so much of Greece last year.
Cheers for now
DB
Dear Sean and Helen,
What a lovely blog. I made the comment above about the fire. We are actually from a similar neck of the woods – I come from Bolton though Mrs Dubaibilly is South African.
We work and live in Dubai, own a house in the centre of Skopelos Town and like to get to the island when we can – unfortunately we are wage slaves in the fastest growing economy in the world and have to stay here ‘cos we wouldn’t be able to pay for the house otherwise.
Please keep your blog going – Ilook forward to reading more of your adventures.
Cheers for now
DB
Thanks for your comments, I’d already read your blog whilst searching for info on Skopelos before we moved here. Hope you carry on reading!
Regards
Helen
Hi, Just found your blog, we also have a house on Skopelos, which we bought about 5 yrs ago.
We wish you all the best in your new adventure.
