Veganism and Greece

Having been a vegan for 20 years’ and bringing up my 4 year old daughter as a vegan also, it was with some trepidation that I took the decision to move to a small Greek island. I prepared as much as possible; buying a soya milk maker, researching the availability of certain products and preparing my daughter for the possibility that she would have to try different foods! Not an easy thing to convince a very strong willed 4 year old who believes Tesco has stores everywhere. She informed me that I had to get my home made soya milk to taste just like Tesco’s or she wouldn’t drink it.
I have managed to master the art of soya milk and almond milk making but unfortunately finding soya beans is proving quite problematic. We’re currently using ones I’ve brought from England and someone is bringing us another 2 kilos when they come out next week. I’ll try to find a regular supplier but enquiring in the local supermarkets has drawn a blank. Also proving difficult is finding a margarine that does not contain any form of milk. I have the greek words for lactic acid etched in my memory and can now spot them a mile off!
Once we have settled into our new home I have to try and master the making of vegan cheese and yogurts. I didn’t realise being a vegan in Greece would involve me spending most of my time in the kitchen but hopefully it will get easier as time goes on and hopefully my little one will widen her culinary repertoire and start to make my life a little easier.
